How Do I Care For My Bag?

Oct. 12, 2021

Being a novice to the intricacies of a classic, vintage or classic car better than its counterparts, such as the introduction of innovative engineering (e.g. power brakes) or precise workmanship of the bodywork, trim while chrome-plated or, in the case of high-performance cars, engine size would be a factor in increasing value. Essentially, details, whether visual or not, enhance the performance and aesthetics of a well-designed car

Comparing the unique elements of a car to the creation of a bespoke leather handbag, the master craftsman starts with clean, flawless leather, tanned to capture the natural beauty of the leather. Before starting to cut the leather, the designer will carefully decide which bag hardware to add to the function or design, adding its unique value to the finished handbag.

Caring for your bag is easy! To keep your bags in perfect shape, avoid leaving them in places where they will be exposed to extreme heat, such as the boot of a car, as this can cause them to warp. Avoid leaning or resting heavier items against your bag as this may cause your bag to deform. When the straps are not up and in use, keep them in the down 'u' position to keep them in good shape.

Quality leather is well cared for and will last for decades, lasting and developing a bronze color. Genuine leather is animal skin and therefore requires care and moisture - when it starts to dry out, it will eventually crack and flake. To keep your leather moist, you should regularly use a suitable cleaner and/or conditioner; you should also be aware of the humidity levels around you, as low humidity can cause the leather to lose moisture and become brittle. Most of the time, it is not the leather itself that cracks, but the finish or sealant on the surface.

Cleaning leather with the wrong products can cause it to flake, for example, products containing solvents and chemicals. Even baby wipes can cause damage because the chemicals in them break down and rub off the leather's finish, so although they are safe for babies, they are not safe for leather. Poor quality leather, especially bonded leather, is also more likely to crack and flake. Under reasonable circumstances and with correct care, high-quality leather should not flake.

Bonded leather is a cheaper alternative to good quality or top grain leather - its price reflects its value and durability and is most commonly used for upholstery. It is made from scraps of recycled leather and is held together with a strong adhesive before being attached to polyurethane (PU) covering. Bonded leather does not have the same elasticity or stretch as genuine leather, so once the stretch point is reached, the synthetic PU covering can easily peel off the leather strip.

Fake bonded leather is actually classified as one of the most common types of 'leather material' due to its poor quality and the scarcity of genuine leather. Because it is not the real deal and, like bonded leather, is a cheap substitute made from synthetic materials such as PU or PVC, it does not have the same durability and often starts to crack and peel after just a few months of use.

Overall, it is important to keep your leather moist and soft by using the right products for your items. Good quality leather does not crack or peel and its appearance actually improves over the years, whereas lower quality leathers and materials do not have the same durability and resilience.
